# Bring your own key

## Bring your own key

Bring your own key (BYOK) connects your own provider account to an assistant.

Your provider bills usage directly to you.

### What does BYOK include?

Replai verifies the key before saving it.

The key is encrypted at rest.

The saved value is never shown again.

### Does Replai add markup?

No.

Replai does not add markup to provider usage billed on your key.

### How do you set it up?

{% stepper %}
{% step %}

### Choose Claude

Claude is the selectable provider today.
{% endstep %}

{% step %}

### Paste the key

For Anthropic, keys start with `sk-ant-`.
{% endstep %}

{% step %}

### Save after verification

Replai verifies the key before it is saved.
{% endstep %}
{% endstepper %}

### What happens if you leave the key field blank later?

Replai keeps the existing saved key.

Paste a new key only when you want to rotate it.

{% hint style="warning" %}
Never place provider keys in widget code or other browser code.
{% endhint %}

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation dynamically by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the current page URL with the `ask` query parameter, and the optional `goal` query parameter:

```
GET https://replai-1.gitbook.io/replai-docs/ai-and-models/bring-your-own-key.md?ask=<question>&goal=<endgoal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is optional and describes the broader end goal you are ultimately trying to accomplish on behalf of the user. GitBook uses it to tailor the answer towards what is most useful for that goal.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
